Wahoo! I LOVE these little babies. They are not that widely seen – I’ve only found them in a couple stores around here (Metropolitan Market and Whole Foods). But they are amazing. I love eating them fresh – right off the stems. They have this tart and slightly sweet flavor… Mmm! I look forward to them every year. One of these days I’m going to plant my own currant bushes and grow them myself.
My mother-in-law always just made jelly from them; which is awesome, but there is so much more! One of my favorite things is to make a currant-strawberry cobbler. Or currant kolaches. Both of these I have to adjust to be GF and vegan, and I will do it, because living without cobbler or kolaches is not an option. 🙂 Anyway, when you find these beautiful tiny jewels, pick some up – try some fresh, or throw into your breakfast or a pastry or dessert – I’m sure you’ll like them as much as I do.
Oh, and a note- I don’t like the black currants at all. The skins are tough and bitter… They make fine jelly, though (definitely need cooking), but not much else. The red and white currants are the ones I’m talking about in this. So if you made judgement on black currants, I urge you to try the other kinds – they are not really alike!
Note #2 – if you buy a bunch of these, you should eat them right away. They’re pretty delicate and don’t last very long. However, you can pull them off the the stems and freeze them to use later, which is what i do, and that works just fine!
